Looking for a new and exciting job opportunity?  We are looking for an Assistant Designer, Signals to join our team!

What You Will Do

Reporting to the Senior Design Engineer, Signals, you will provide engineering support in the preparation, analysis, monitoring, and co-ordination of new projects or modifications to existing equipment of TTC’s systems and related equipment for Subway Communications and Signalling. You will assist with the preparation of designs, estimates, material lists, specifications, standards, policies, work methods, test procedures, and engineering drawings in relation to the TTC’s rail signaling and train control systems/projects.

For section specific projects, you will perform engineering calculations to produce complete engineering designs and specifications, and design vital and non-vital circuits in accordance with signal design standards for new and modified signal design systems.  You will assist with tender and proposal evaluation, and provide cost comparisons, feasibility studies, and budget estimates. You will also assist with the review of external submissions related to subway signalling designs to verify accuracy, conformity with TTC specifications, and conformity with applicable code requirements.

As an Assistant Designer, Signals, you will assist with the testing, commissioning, and inspection of new systems and conduct investigations into operational, communications, or subway signalling problems. You will also assess, diagnose, correct, and eliminate non-routine problems and complex failures, and provide root cause assessments. You will also evaluate and provide engineered solutions for operational problems and defects in new and/or existing systems and investigate the effectiveness of changes in procedures, designs, or materials. You will also assemble, prepare, and/or review various reports, staff summary sheets, project status and progress reports, documentation on inspection visits, and other correspondence related to the work.

You will liaise with staff of various TTC departments to ensure coherence and consistency of information on drawings for relevant project components and designs that meet TTC’s operating requirements. You will also coordinate, direct and guide relevant TTC staff and/or consultants, contractors, suppliers and manufacturers in section specific design work, equipment or systems while ensuring compliance with TTC design standards and specifications.  On occasion, you may be required to provide engineering support and guidance to relevant TTC staff outside of normal working hours.

What Qualifications Do You Bring?

  • Your educational background will consist of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline (i.e. Electrical or Computer Engineering), or a combination of education, training, and experience deemed to be equivalent.
  • Your registration or eligibility to register as a licensed Engineer with the Professional Engineers of Ontario is an asset.
  • In addition, your strong knowledge of information technology (IT) concepts, including technical experience with computer networking and system administration including: Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Windows Server operating system environments; virtualization; programming and scripting in Bash, Python, C, and JavaScript will be considered an asset.
  • Your application will demonstrate sound knowledge of electrical or systems engineering principles, methods and practices.
  • Your application will demonstrate good working knowledge of signalling design principles and signalling equipment, vital circuits and systems including Computer Based Interlocking (CBI) and Communications Based Train Control systems (CBTC) – Wayside and/or On Board Signalling equipment and software.
  • Your application will also demonstrate good working knowledge of signal system testing methods, testing equipment, computers, real-time networks and vital on-line applications and other associated rail signaling equipment.
  • Your experience developing and implementing cybersecurity controls, remediation of security issues, identifying and managing threats in Operational Technology (OT) environments will be considered an asset.
  • Your experience with SCADA software programming, SCADA historians, relational databases, SQL, PLCs, and protocols such as Modbus & OPC UA will give you an advantage in this role.
  • Your application will reveal a familiarity of computers and software applications related to the work such as Bentley Microstation CADD, Excel & VBA.
  • You will have sound judgement and well-developed technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.  In addition, you will have excellent interpersonal, verbal communication and engineering report writing skills.
  • Lastly, your application will reveal knowledge of the Ontario Electrical Safety Authority Code, AREMA Communications & Signals Manual of Recommended Practices, CENELEC, TTC standards, CSA standards, and other applicable codes/practices/standards, the TTC’s rail signaling systems and associated electrical/electronic equipment.
