Looking for a new and exciting job opportunity? We are looking for an Assistant Designer, Communications to join our team!

What You Will Do

Reporting to the Senior Design Engineer – Communications, you will provide technical support in the preparation, analysis, monitoring and co-ordination of new projects or modifications to existing equipment as related to the design and testing of TTC’s Communications systems and equipment for the department (i.e., Access Control and Video Management Systems).  You will assist with the preparation of estimates, material lists, specifications, standards, policies, work methods, test procedures and drawings.  You will also conduct engineering analyses, evaluations, tests and draw conclusions.  You will conduct investigations into electrical, signaling or track problems and detect new areas needing engineering attention to improve safety, productivity and cost effectiveness.

As an Assistant Designer – Communications, you will layout/prepare designs and drawings for various projects in accordance with TTC design standards and various codes, Engineers’ notes, rough sketches, verbal instructions and own design concepts.  You will review and interpret existing conditions, drawings, specifications, and material submissions.  You will also obtain additional data necessary for the completion of accurate drawings and specifications, and conformity with TTC master specifications and design manuals.

You will initiate and research design standards and apply your knowledge to ensure final designs are practical and meet TTC and industry standards, codes and requirements.  You will conduct studies as directed and research reference drawings for structural details.

In this role, you will provide direction and guidance to operational maintenance personnel, supervisory staff, students or on-site contract employees regarding existing equipment, new installations or inspection work.

Additionally, you will troubleshoot and investigate operational problems, perform defect analyses, evaluate and provide engineered solutions for new and/or existing systems.  You will investigate the effectiveness of changes in procedures, designs, or materials.  You will administer the construction, inspection, testing and commissioning of new, existing and proposed section specific systems as required.  As an Assistant Designer – Communications, you will assemble, prepare and/or review various reports, project status and progress reports, documentation on inspection visits, and other correspondence related to the work.

What Qualifications Do You Bring?

  • Your educational background will consist of the completion of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline (i.e., Electrical Engineering) or combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
  • Certification through PEO or O.A.C.E.T.T. is considered an asset.
  • Access control training and proficiency is considered an asset.
  • Computer networking certification, training and proficiency is also considered an asset.
  • Your application will demonstrate your experience servicing, installing, and programming access control and intrusion systems.
  • Your understanding and working knowledge of access control system design principles, access control equipment, associated access control electronic testing equipment, vital and non-vital system and other associated access control equipment will be evident in your application.
  • You will also have sound knowledge of design principles, methods, procedures, practices and measurements associated with access control systems.
  • You will have knowledge of the Ontario Hydro Electric Safety Code, Ontario Building Code, CSA standards and other applicable codes and standards associated with access control systems.
  • Your sound judgement, proven technical design skills, well-developed organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills, effective verbal communication and technical report writing skills will benefit you in this role
  • You will have knowledge of CADD (preferably Microstation CADD) and other computerized applications applicable to the work (e.g. MS Office, MS Word, Excel etc.).
  • You will be required to obtain Subway Rulebook Certification.
  • As an Assistant Designer – Communications, you will be required to work outside of regular work hours to provide support and guidance to maintenance staff.
