What You Will Do

You will receive training in performing labour and operation of small equipment related to the maintenance and construction of subway, loading platforms, tangent and special track-work installation, placing of concrete, or other paving materials, installation of drains, and performing a variety of work on electrical and manual switch mechanisms. The work will also involve the operation of a truck or special purpose vehicle. The work may be performed at either a subway location, the Way Maintenance Yard, and/or track maintenance and construction sites.

This also involves:

  • Line up track and ensure correct gap for thermite welding;
  • Assemble switches and turnouts, or rebuild with new parts when necessary;
  • May be required to clean, lubricate, inspect and make minor repairs to switch lock mechanisms;
  • Lay track drains and drain pipes, etc.;
  • Break out, remove and replace a variety of track allowance, roadway and subway invert paving material as required;
  • Operate and maintain various electrical and pneumatic equipment such as jack hammers, concrete breakers, chippers, tampers, wrenches, rail saws, rail drills, saws, grinders, switch grinder, profile grinder, etc.;
  • Start, operate, shut down and perform minor servicing on compressors, generators, saws, drills, impact wrenches, vibrating equipment and accessories;
  • Set out traffic delineators, barricades, track lights, flags, and/or impassable track set-ups on various work sites, in strict accordance with published safety regulations;

The work is performed under the direction of Subway Track supervisory staff.

What Qualifications Do You Bring?

  • Must have completed Grade 10 education or its recognized equivalent as determined by the assessment of education credentials by the TTC Operations Training Centre;
  • Must have at least one month experience as a Track Worker;
  • Must be able to comprehend verbal and written instructions as demonstrated by an ability to understand and follow published operating/safety rules and regulations;
  • Must be able to speak clearly in order to exchange information and instructions with Control Centres;
  • Must have a valid class “G” province of Ontario driver’s licence, or better, and be able to pass the written and practical tests required for a class “DZ” driver’s licence;
  • Must be able to attend and successfully complete all portions of the training to sustain the trainee status;
  • Will be classified as a Track Maintainer Trainee for a period of 9 months during which time the applicable training will be given;
  • The successful candidate who has successfully complete the classroom and the on-the-job training will be classified as a Track Maintainer (Wage Group 5);
  • Will be required to be fitted with a respirator;
  • Must have or rapidly acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employees.
