Looking for a new and exciting job opportunity? We are looking for a Design Engineer, Electrical to join our team!

What You Will Do

Reporting to the Senior Design Engineer, you will be responsible for providing expertise in relation to engineering work associated with the design, operations, maintenance and rehabilitation of TTC’s systems and components for electrical, traction power systems and substations.

For department specific system projects, you will plan, schedule and produce detailed design, contract specifications and engineering drawings.  You will coordinate, direct and guide relevant TTC staff and/or consultants, contractors, suppliers and manufacturers in section specific design work, equipment or systems. You will resolve design issues to ensure compliance with TTC design standards and specifications.  Additionally, you will perform a variety of complex engineering calculations to produce complete engineering designs and specifications for department specific system projects.

As a Design Engineer, Electrical, you will investigate, evaluate, and test new TTC, existing or proposed systems, components and/or construction methods, troubleshoot operating problems, malfunctions/faults and recommend alternate design, procedures, equipment, materials and related matters.  You will perform feasibility studies and surveys, and assess the condition and safety of existing structures, systems and/or equipment to determine the extent of repair required and conformance to design.

You will compile cost and quantity estimates for specific projects, programs, monitor projects to meet goals and objectives.  You will also initiate relevant procurement processes, review technical proposals and quotations from consultants for compliance with requirements, evaluate tenders, and make recommendations for award, and monitor progress.  In this role, you will perform feasibility studies, surveys and assess the condition of existing systems and equipment, determining the extent of repair, safety of equipment and systems.  You will perform random audits at sites to determine quality assurance and conformance to design.  Additionally, you will provide design review expertise of submissions at various stages of design and provide comments concerning compliance with requirements.  You will report significant safety, hazard, security, cost, reliability, warranty, quality and other engineering issues in a timely manner.

In this position, you will also take professional responsibility for engineering work as required by the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO).  You will also be responsible for the coordination, direction and guidance of relevant TTC staff and/or consultants, contractors, suppliers and manufacturers in section specific design work, equipment or systems while ensuring compliance with TTC design standards and specifications.  You will independently access all TTC properties, construction sites, and track level on a 24-hour basis, 7 days a week. You will also be responsible for going into the field before the design starts, during the design and construction phases, and during the testing and commissioning phase.  On occasion, you may be required to provide engineering support and guidance to relevant TTC staff outside of normal working hours.

Lastly, you will be responsible for promoting a respectful work and service environment that supports diversity, inclusion, and is free from harassment and discrimination. What Qualifications Do You Bring?

  • Your educational background will consist of the completion of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree (i.e. Electrical Engineering) in a related discipline or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
  • Your registration as a licensed Engineer with the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) is mandatory.
  • Your application will reveal several years of directly related work experience.
  • It will also demonstrate mandatory experience with power substations, switchgear, control circuit, programmable logic controllers and overcurrent protective relays.
  • Your sound knowledge of electrical engineering principles, methods and practices and thorough knowledge of electrical power system design principles, and equipment will be evident.
  • You will have good working knowledge of industrial power systems including low and medium voltage switchgear, power transformers, electrical grounding, protection and metering, lighting, and power systems electrical test equipment.
  • You application will also demonstrate good practical experience with low and high voltage circuit breakers, protective relays, overcurrent protection coordination, intelligent electronic devices, programmable logic controllers and IEC61850, lighting, and electrical and traction power systems.
  • You will have sound judgement and well-developed technical, analytical, problem solving, interpersonal, verbal communication and engineering report-writing skills.
  • Your strong knowledge of personal computers and computerized applications related to the work (e.g. MS Office, MS Word, Excel etc.)  Strong knowledge of Microstation CADD systems and operations will be demonstrated in your application.
  • In this role, you will have or acquire Subway Rulebook Certification to be able to work at track level, and Work Protection Code training to be able to work on site in an electrical environment.
  • Lastly, your application will demonstrate strong knowledge of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, CEC, CSA, NFPA, and applicable codes/practices/standards, the TTC’s electrical and traction power systems and the associated electrical/electronic equipment as well as the various functions carried out by the Signals/Electrical/Communications Department.
